Dans "Dracula 4 : L’Ombre du Dragon", le joueur incarne Ellen Cross, une restauratrice de tableaux mandatée par le New York Metropolitan Museum pour identifier un tableau qui vient de réapparaitre à Budapest. Quelques mois auparavant, ce tableau et la collection à laquelle il était rattaché avaient mystérieusement disparus en mer.

L’enquête commence. Elle amènera Ellen Cross à voyager à travers le monde (Turquie, Hongrie, Angleterre, Etats-Unis...) et à rencontrer des personnages énigmatiques tels que Adam B. Stoker, l’arrière petit-fils du célèbre romancier....

Au lancement du jeu, l’utilisateur choisit de jouer un Prologue (pour apprendre et maîtriser les bases du gameplay) ou de commencer directement son enquête au château de Whitby, en Angleterre.

D’emblée, deux modes de jeux sont accessibles :

Le mode Casual (joueurs occasionnels) permet de profiter de nombreuses aides au court de l’aventure. Des marqueurs indiquent les lieux à visiter. De même, la possibilité de passer automatiquement les énigmes ou les puzzles apparaît si le joueur est perdu.
A l’inverse, le mode Aventure offre la possibilité de jouer sans aucune aide, ni indication et privilégie le challenge et la difficulté.




A travers une vue à 360 degrés, le joueur se déplace à la première personne dans des environnements en trois dimensions où il doit faire preuve d’observation et de réflexion pour résoudre les énigmes qui se dresseront sur son chemin.

Pour cela, il dispose d’un inventaire rapide qui lui permet d’équiper un objet et l’utiliser au cours du jeu (par exemple, la lumière noire permet d’examiner les tableaux qu’Ellen découvrira).

L’inventaire Complet regroupe l’ensemble des objets qu’Ellen récupérera au fil de l’aventure et permet d’en combiner certains (associer de la cire avec le tampon du Metropolitan Museum, pour sceller une œuvre d’Art par exemple).

De même, le Journal d’Ellen lui permet de consigner les informations importantes de l’aventure (coupures de presse, objectifs à atteindre, retranscription des discussions réalisées....) tandis que la trousse médicale réunit les médicaments de l’héroïne et la posologie.

Le joueur apprend qu’Ellen Cross est atteinte d’une maladie rare qui dégrade sa santé. Par conséquent, il devra régulièrement combiner et utiliser des médicaments pour restaurer la santé d’Ellen, sous peine de ne plus pouvoir accomplir certaines actions. Cette contrainte incite le joueur à être attentif et accentue l’immersion dans la peau de l’héroïne.

Enfin, le joueur pourra débloquer plus d’une vingtaine de trophées et tenter d’améliorer son score au fil de la partie. Le système de score récompense les joueurs qui termineront le jeu rapidement, en utilisant un minimum d’aides.
